| - After getting my first eye exam in 10 years (I know, I know) and deciding that most of the options at the first shop I visited were out of my price range, I decided to pay a visit to Discount Optical, and was not disappointed. If you're looking for vintage frames from the 80s for very little money, this is definitely the spot for you. One pair I briefly considered were only $70, there is a big section of them near the front window facing Bloor St.
But in the end I decided to go for something more neutral/contemporary and they have a wide range of reasonably priced options inside the cases near the middle of the shop. They carry many brand names including Guess, Coach, Fendi, Burberry, Tom Ford and others. The lady who waited on me was patient and not at all pushy, and gave me her honest opinion when asked.
The biggest price difference ended up being not in the frames I chose, which were only about $50 less than some I looked at in the other shop, but the lenses. Based on my prescription they were priced from $75-$120 depending on whether I wanted a coating, compared to $220 that I had been quoted elsewhere. To top it all off when I made my final selection they were able to prepare them while I waited, even though it was shortly before closing on a Saturday. Overall, really pleased with my experience here, already thinking about coming back for a second pair in the new year!
