  • NYS-- A Sports Disorganization Our son was involved in NYS basketball a few years ago and then got involved in other activities and didn't play basketball for about 3 years. He wanted to play again this summer and we signed him up knowing that he would have probably fallen behind other players his age. Our only reason was to give him some experience playing the game again and being aware of the NYS regulation that all players would be allowed to play half of each game, we enrolled him. Our son only played a few minutes (not nearly half) of the first game which our team won handily. We sent the coach an email asking that he please observe the NYS rule to play each player half the game. He responded with an email that didn't make much sense so during the second game we took pictures of the bench each time the coach made a player change and tracked the time each player sat on the bench. The times were documented on the picture and we wrote them down as well. This second game was much closer than the first and our team won in overtime. Five players including the coach's son, played almost the whole game, sitting for only about 10 minutes. One player was on the bench for only 4 minutes! The other four players sat on the bench for about 40 minutes of a 50 minute game. We sent the pictures and time results that prove the coach was not following the NYS regulation to the coach. His response was that the only thing that gets them playing time is their focus and effort. Well, of course when a player needs experience it will look like they are not focused or making an effort and I responded that he needs to follow the NYS guideline of fifty percent playing time for each team member no matter the child's ability. I emailed the proof of the violation to NYS and I never heard from the Director at all, but the office person told me NYS was going to agree with the coach and that he handled everything properly. They refused to even allow me to discuss it at their office. You just can't make these things up. They did refund my money less a "processing fee according to their policy." Too bad they don't enforce their other policies! Yes, the world is sometimes unfair, and I know that on a school team, the best five would play the game, but NYS states that all players will participate in the games equally. Well, don't waste your time asking them to stick to that rule. My son is very disappointed as he has friends playing on other teams and wanted to continue. Shame on NYS.
