  • I have been hearing about Monty's Blue Plate Diner ever since I moved to Madison because some of my co-workers absolutely LOVE this place. It took me almost 5 months to get here which is kind of unfortunate, because it is GREAT! The first thing I was told about Monty's was that it is like an upscale diner that serves vegan and vegetarian food. This is kind of true, because it is a diner, it is nice inside and not super divey and you can order lots of dishes as vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free. However, I would definitely not describe Monty's as a vegan/vegetarian restaurant because half of the items contain eggs or bacon, as any good diner should. The first time I went I ordered blueberry pancakes, the short stack, and a simple glass or orange juice. I passed on the free bottomless cup of coffee that you get when you check in because I had already had my coffee for the day. The pancakes were good, nothing fancy, but solid. Two was plenty for me as they were a large-ish size. Second time I ordered the Monty's breakfast sandwich which had bacon, avocado, fried egg, herbed goat cheese, and something leafy I think on cheddar jalepeno bread. It was served with their American potatoes which remind me of the potatoes I got at Grampas brunch. The sandwich was tasty, though I was disappointed a little by the bread as it didn't have much jalepeno or cheddar flavor and mostly tasted like toasted white bread. Third visit I went with the Blue Plate Special Omelet that had bacon, avocado, and cheddar inside with salsa on top served with American potatoes and a biscuit. I also finally got one of their mimosas that are very popular among Saturday brunch goers. The omelet was really tasty, only needed a little salt and pepper on top and as always, the potatoes were awesome. I also had an outstanding biscuit, warm, moist, flaky and crumbly at the same time with a nice crust on top. Nomnomnom. Overall Monty's is an excellent choice with solid diner food, friendly service and fairly reasonable prices. Perfect for people that have different dietary choices as there is seemingly something for everyone!
