| - This will be a unique review but is a clear representation of Residences at Brookline. I was the first person to move into the complex when buildings were still being constructed. It WAS a dream. The amenities were nice, landscaping WAS beautiful, and you were treated by others like you would expect to be at your home. These apartments are a premium to pay, so I was under the impression that it would attract those of higher stature, not scum. The "community" quickly filled up and degraded immediately within the first 7 months (and it's still growing). I'm not fully certain what it is that has ruined this community, whether it's management, screening processes of applicants, location, or simply that it's too big for what the staff can reasonably handle. I have since terminated my lease due to the poor quality of living that the community has presented. The inside of my apartment was beautiful - but step out your apartment door, interact with the community or staff, or simply try to have a life out of your apartment and you'll quickly see the flaws.
What's so significantly sub-par? Here are just a few things:
Traffic / Parking / Infrastructure: Don't step off the sidewalks or you'll get hit. Hardly anyone stops at the stop signs and there are many blind corners due to cars blocking views. If you drive a vehicle, make sure you have a dash cam because the way people drive in the "community", you're almost certain to get your front bumper taken right off. I've had over 5 comments to the Leasing Office about these issues. I assure you that nothing was done. In fact, it's not just residents that speed through the complex and fly through the stop signs -- I've observed maintenance and leasing staff violating it all the time as well. Beyond that, expect to see many cars sitting in a spot for a long time all broken down and not being driven or even registered. They say they have a policy against it but it doesn't get enforced.
Smoking / Drugs: There's supposed to be a no-smoking policy. Residents smoke all the time on the property. There are dry pine needles that are littered with butts all over. It's a matter of days before a building goes up in flames because someone had to violate the community policy and smoke & discard their cigarettes in the flower beds. It's not very good if your dog gets a hold of one either. Again, I have notified the Leasing Office at least twenty times of these violations and even sent photos of the discarded butts. I've been told that it's a policy that essentially "unenforceable" and that people are going to smoke. I've also had to report illegal drug use to the office on multiple occasions. I was told to call the police. There's not much they can do so you're just going to have to live with it. Definitely not the home you'd like to invite friends and coworkers to.
Harassment: If you don't leave your apartment, you're fine. Step outside and meet your rude neighbors. There are some decent people there, but they won't stay very long...I sure didn't. Police are always there. Look the place up on the CrimeMapping website.
Filth: Not exactly sure what maintenance does. They don't keep up the visual appeal or cleanliness of the property though. For hundreds of residents, there is one trash compactor. Almost every morning, there is a pile of trash bags strewn all over the sidewalk because the trash compactor has been filled up. Not a pretty sight to me or visitors -- especially when it's wet and rainy and you get the unsanitary trash water leaking all over. Beyond this, the breezeways are very dirty. I've lived there for one year and have not once seen maintenance come out to clean any of the breezeways. They're littered with nails & screws from construction as well as dirt and cobwebs. After showing this in person to the Property Manager, I was told "anyone can come out and clean them. Look, I'll brush it off with my shoe right now." However, this isn't what I'm paying the premium to live her for.
Need Assistance?: The office staff is very unreliable. They most certainly dodge phone calls. There have been multiple times where I have called the office only to have the phone ring multiple times and go to the Leasing Office voicemail. Not even 2 minutes later, take a walk to the Leasing Office and it'll be filled with staff that are not on the phones and not with any residents / potential residents.
Packages: Do you frequently shop online or get medication delivered in the mail? You better be home when the mail comes or have a good eye on your tracking information. Otherwise it'll get delivered to the office and you'll never get notified that something has been signed for on your behalf.
The community WAS nice but has reached a point where I highly doubt it will ever be nice again unless serious changes are made. If you are considering Residences at Brookline, I would highly recommend you look elsewhere. It's certainly not worth the price and not a place that I would ever call home.
