| - If you're in need of something hand-batiked for your vegan sister-in-law's baby shower, then head on over to the Blue Banana Market. I had never noticed this behemoth of a store in the historic Kensington Market neighborhood until a friend was in from out of town. As we walked through the coffee shops, fruit stalls and vintage stores, the Blue Banana suddenly loomed in front of us. He asked me what it was and I had to honestly say I had no idea. We walked in and our eyes grew saucer-like.
Imagine a Winner's size store, except replace everything in it with "artisan" products made from sustainable products at fair trade prices. With literally hundreds of items from what I'll presume to be different sellers housed under one roof, they certainly have a handle on volume. And while this really isn't my type of thing, they do have some nice handmade and organic bath products, as well as a really fun candy section. Overall though, the store irked me in a way that's hard to describe. It's a huge, upscale, overpriced tribute to social awareness-driven consumption. No, I don't want the handpainted tea towels made from sustainably-harvested bamboo. But if that is your cup of tea, you will love this place.
