  • Honestly, I will not let Norm ruin my, one third of a century long, love of Chuck Box burgers and would come back and eat here again. But if nothing else, maybe somebody should talk to Norm about not treating customers badly. SO here is what we went through. I have been coming to this place for the last 33 years. THE FOOD NEVER DISAPPOINTS. Great tasting burgers. So the two star rating is NOT for the food. (That deserves five stars) I am a creature of habit so I always order the same items. The Little One (it used to be the Big One but I'm older now) on white with jalapeno jack cheese, french fries and mushrooms. My friends and family always want to go to the Chuck Box when they visit from out of town. This evening was just such an occasion. I have family visiting so we went there. No disappointment in the food......except when Norm tried to pull a fast one on us. Other than about six people already dotted around the dining room there was no one there. So we placed our order, and moved up to get ourselves our drinks and wait. We watched the cook, start the beef patties on the grill and throw the mushrooms and onion rings into the fryer. After watching him for a few minute, I thought maybe he had not heard my order of the fries, so I mentioned that I wanted fries as well. Suddenly Norm appeared from somewhere and said that he had them. He proceeded to get some older already cooked fries out from the tray next to the fryer, threw them, with an attitude, into the fryer, and pulled them out after 15 seconds. He then put them into a couple of paper fries envelopes and placed them under the heat lamp. We were a little concerned with this. Then a minute before our food was ready Norm threw in two batches of frozen fries into the fryer. I looked at that and thought, "OK so we don't have to have the re-fried fries". So a few minutes later when our burgers, mushrooms and onion rings were ready we collected them and moved to pay. Norm rang us up and asked why we did not take the fries. So we said that we would like to have the freshly fried fries and we could wait for those. So he got upset and said that he had made those fresh just for us and the new batch was being made fresh for the new people that had walked in after us and if he gave us those new ones then he would have to make more for them. So I stood there trying to understand if Norm is a liar, or if he actually believes that taking already fried cold fries and throwing them into hot oil for a few seconds makes them fresh or maybe he does not actually know that we were standing in front of the fryer watching him and the cook the whole time. I finally said that I did not want the fries he was offering us, so he promptly picked them up and threw them into the garbage. (If they were so fresh why did he not just give them to people who were right behind us in line?) Anyway for the first time in the three decades that I have been eating here I was disappointed by the service here.
