| - ((This is a review for the Chinese New Year banquet held here every year))
I've been here twice (3 years apart) for the Chinese New Year banquet with a large group of friends, and it's always been a blast.
We came across the event, while looking for something to do as a group of friends to celebrate Chinese New Year. Aside from free festivals (mostly geared towards kids), and clubbing, there wasn't much out there. We liked the idea that there was a venue, sit down dinner and celebrations (lion dance and the God of Fortune) for an all out party.
The tables here are mostly reserved for the partners and community members of the Chinese Cultural Centre, but there are also tables open to the public. If you can fill the table with 10/11 of your friends, it doesn't really matter who else is in the room.
$39 will get you a 10 course dinner (yes I've counted), some activities, performances and a chance to win the centre piece, Drinks are not included and this year it was $5 for a glass/$30 for a bottle of wine. Pop/tea/water is free.
We came once three years ago, and the crowd was much smaller with less general public attendees. The lion's dance was longer, and the food came quicker. We also met a lesser known Patrick Chan!
This year, although at least 2x the amount of people were there from all over. The lions dance was significantly shorter, and the performances were very sub par (Worst. Magic. Show. Ever). Sitting in the corner of the large room, speakers were hard to hear, and we missed the last call for alcohol at 9pm!
The food itself was a decent meal, however it was slowly served to us from 8pm to 12am. (note, we got there at 6:30pm, as told by the poster). No food makes for antsy group of 20 somethings.
We got to play a game for bingo ($5 a ticket, and a chance to win the pot $800!) and the God of Fortune came around and gave us a red pocket with a chocolate loonie.
We might come back, the only turn off being the slow delivery of food and glassy eyes at 12am.
But if that doesn't matter, it's agreat place to celebrate the new year with friends!
