  • Call it what you want. Shaved ice, snow cones, or in the case of the corporate, Tropical Sno. There really isn't much of a difference that I'm aware of. Tropical Sno, however, is a trademarked name. This is a good thing. Similar to Thrifty Ice Cream, the stuff I'm eating in present day remains just as good as I remember growing up. These little kiosks were quite common when I lived in the Midwest. In fact, every surrounding small-town seemed to have a Tropical Sno. Ours was only open seasonally, being quite busy in the summer and then inevitably closing every winter. The owners have a bit of autonomy, so they're allowed to make up their own hours as they see fit. It's a simple concept. You have the option to create your own flavor combinations or go with one of the suggestions from the menu. Since these technically aren't franchisees, the owners are at liberty to make-up their own flavor names. I remember my old Tropical Sno having a flavor for practically everything related to pop culture at that current point in time. You won't find any of that here, but that doesn't discredit how good the ice is. I've tried the vanilla ice cream addition, which I assumed would be similar to the frozen yogurt found in the gelati from Rita's Italian Ice. Unfortunately, it's just basic ice cream that's somewhat generic. I don't feel it's needed, although the vanilla or coconut cream/drizzle is a nice boost if you insist on having an additional flavor. These locations are pretty sparse in Phoenix, but if shaved ice is your thing, you'll be quite pleased with what's offered here. Recommended!
