  • People, the word "fresh" is in the name of the store!! About a year ago, I bought something (don't remember what) that I found had already expired when I got home. I chalked it up to a fluke and threw it out. I didn't even bother to take it back to the store. About 6 months ago, I bought a bottle of expensive salad dressing, and when I went to use it the following day, I found that the "use by" date was the day I purchased it. Who uses an entire bottle of salad dressing the day they bring it home from the store? I tried to return it, and was told that since it was purchased ON the "use by" day and not the day AFTER, there was "nothing they could do." I was furious, but let it slide. (I also looked at the other dressings of that brand and found that all of them were within a few days or weeks of the use-by date. Giant Eagle sells the same brand, but they are always stocked several months ahead of the "use-by" date.) 2 days ago, I purchased 3 bags of groceries, including a jar of minced garlic and a pre-assembled ready-to-cook dinner (like Blue Apron). By the time I got home, the garlic had leaked all over my car and my other groceries, indicating that it had already been opened and not resealed, or was cracked. (I promise I did NOT open or crack it myself.) I took it back that day and exchanged it. I noticed as I got home that the new jar, as well, was wet with garlic juice. I have not yet opened it so I don't yet know if the seal was broken. Then last night I cooked the ready-to-cook dinner. It was a Korean beef stir-fry. The veggies seemed fresh and the beef looked a little iffy but smelled ok. I tasted it as I cooked, and it was very tasty. As directed, I microwaved the pouch of rice to go under the stir-fry and when I dumped it on to the plates I found that it was covered with mold. I found that on the pouch of rice was a "use by" date that was 6 DAYS BEFORE I PURCHASED THE PRODUCT!! The only "use-by" label was INSIDE the box where I could not have seen it before purchasing. Having already taken the time to cook (and having nothing else defrosted), we threw the food away and went out to eat. When I got home, I got to clean up the mess. The manager asked me if I'd like to replace the product. I said, "God no, I'm finished with Fresh Market" and she just walked away without a reply. No apology or offer to somehow make it up to me. (I did get my money back.) I will not be going back. It is clear to me that they are driving up their profit margins by selling foods other markets would have discarded, which is particularly galling given that they have positioned themselves as a high-end specialty market specializing in FRESH foods! Shame on you, Fresh Market.
