| - As soon as you walk through the door, the smell of freshly baked bread hits your nose. It's absolutely heavenly. If I could bottle this smell and wear it like perfume, I would. Cardenas is a Mexican market that has a full kitchen, bakery, tortilleria, butcher, and deli, as well as regular groceries. This busy store is located right off the 95 and Decatur, on Meadows Lane.
On this particular day 1/31/16, my love and I came here to grab some food for my brother's birthday lunch. We got all the fixings to make tacos: fresh made tortillas, queso fresco, salsa, beans and all the ingredients to make guacamole. The only thing we needed was the meat. We figured it would save time if we bought the meat already cooked, so we ventured over to the kitchen asked for a couple pounds of carne asada and the lady told us it was $12.99 per lb. Wtf? That's wayyyyy too expensive. So we went to the butcher and got 2 pounds of uncooked meat for around $10. I also picked up some shrimp ceviche sold by the pound, and some all natural crema. Side note- Although the price of cooked meat is ridonkulous, I have and will continue to purchase food from the kitchen. The burritos are tasty as well as the soups. They also have a dining room where you can eat there, with a soft serve drink station and salsa bar.
I couldn't leave without getting some pastries; Mexican sweet bread is a guilty pleasure of mine, so I headed over to the bakery. They have a large assortment of freshly baked goods- cookies, cakes and breads galore! Baked in-house and extremely reasonably priced. I think I spent $5 for a dozen assorted pastries.
Some other things to note- the produce is insanely cheap all year round. Lots of fruits and veggies to choose from, and they have a small organic section as well. I don't come here for any grocery shopping because everything else is overpriced, but this is definitely one of my favorite places to get some yummy Mexican food and pastries.
