CAR RENTAL
Yesterday I sent the following email to CostcoTravel.com, the web portal thru which I arranged this rental.....
Please see the attached four documents, attached in order to provide documentation for my story.
First off, let me say, I LOVE COSTCO, I LOVE COSTCOTRAVEL.COM, YOUR BUSINESS IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST IN AMERICA.
This entire incident is purely a problem with Avis.
I needed a fullsize car for 3 days, from 12/14/2017 thru 12/17/2017, pick-up & drop-off at McCarran International Airport Rent-A-Car center in Las Vegas, both pick-up & drop-off scheduled for 10:00 AM.
Selecting from the 4 offered automobiles at CostcoTravel.com, I selected Avis.

The original rental quote, via the CostcoTravel.com website.
$ 67.68
We arrived 33 minutes late and rented the car.
DOCUMENT AVIS02 - GENERATED 12/14/2017 10:33 AM
The rental quote upon picking up the car.
$ 62.60
NOTE: Whenever I rent cars via CostcoTravel.com the quote I receive online is ALWAYS MORE than the quote upon picking up and subsequently dropping off the car, but by only by a few dollars. So at the end of the rental the car probably should have cost me $ 62.60, not the online quote of $ 67.68.
I had a second driver on the agreement, but he only drove the car out of (upon pick-up) and into (upon drop-off) the Avis car supply at the agency. I drove the car the rest of the time.
We used the car.
After a little more than 2 days we found ourselves no longer needing the car, earlier than the expected 3 days, so we decided to return the car the night before it was due, less than 12 hours before it was due, so we wouldn't have to get up the next morning to return it.
DOCUMENT AVIS03 - GENERATED 12/16/2017 10:19 PM
The amount charged upon returning the car.
$ 84.58
WHAT? Why was the amount charged about $20 more than what was due upon renting the car?
Here is the AVIS explanation: WE HAD RETURNED THE CAR LESS THAN 12 HOURS EARLIER THAN CONTRACTED AND THEREFORE INCURRED A RATE CHANGE AND THEREFORE PENALTY.
WHAT?
Both of us have been driving rental cars since 1972 and we have NEVER encountered such an idiotic policy, not with Alamo or ANY other rental car service.
So the second driver protested after being charged the wrong amount, and a different agent, not the agent who actually checked in the car, produced a NEW statement of charges, and said a refund would be expected in 24 to 48 hours.
DOCUMENT AVIS04 - GENERATED 12/16/2017 10:19 PM
The NEW statement of charges, with NO refund shown on the receipt.
$ 65.47
NOTE: No refund receipt was ever given to the second driver.
So the SUPPOSED refund due should be $ 84.58 - $ 65.47 = $ 19.11.
HOWEVER, as I said at the beginning, I SHOULD have been charged $ 62.60.
So there REMAINS a refund due of $ $ 65.47 - $ 62.60 = $ 2.87.
So I am now DAILY looking at my MasterCard online, to confirm the amounts I have quoted you above have been charged and refunded, as they have not yet been confirmed online.
AND this is not the first time I've run into problems with Avis. I rented a car with them last January via CostcoTravel.com, and the checking-in agent charged me for the second driver, even tho CostcoTravel.com always covers the charges for the second driver. I had to contact Avis directly via email to get a refund for that charge.
So one thing is certain: I WILL NEVER RENT FROM AVIS AGAIN.
In fact, I had a number of cars booked thru Avis for upcoming trips, and I have cancelled the most recent ones upcoming, even tho the competition (Alamo & Enterprise) rates were $6 to $10 MORE per booking.
Avis AND Budget (which I stopped using in 2015 due to their own problems) are TERRIBLE companies. You really should stop doing business with them.
And I now find it amusing that, unknown to me until today, they are owned by the same parent corporation.
How fitting.
PS After I sent this email I called the MasterCard company thru which I paid for this rental and they said the only pending transaction for Avis was some weird amount having nothing to do with the above. I have a feeling it's gonna take a while to ultimately sort all of this out.
