| - Sweet Jesus is an eye-catching establishment on John St. that is part dairy dessert parlour, and part espresso café. During the summertime, long lineups form outside it's sister restaurant, La Carnita, as people wait to try out the soft-serve creations that are churned out in a tiny space along the building's facade. There's barely room for customers to stand inside and order, which means you'll be waiting a while depending on the time of day or season you choose to visit. If you're trying to get your cone in under five minutes or less, good luck to you.
The soft serve looks tempting and comes loaded with toppings, decorated in a very creative way. It isn't the best tasting ice cream in the world, which leads me to believe that those who come here often are doing so more for the vibe than the quality. I've also tried an affogato, which was an interesting experience that I'm not sure I'd delve into again. Paletas and churros might be the only thing that bring me back in the future, as I'm usually about 2 blocks away on a daily basis.
All in all, the treats here aren't very expensive, so it can't hurt to pop in on occasion. The staff are pretty upbeat and polite, and they go to town when making cones. If you plan on checking them out, don't expect the typical ice cream shop atmosphere. Sweet Jesus is definitely a category of its own.
