  • HOW DID THIS PLACE OBTAIN A GOVERNMENT CONTRACT?? A thoroughly demoralizing and degrading experience. No selection or current frames. If u have a high prescription no thinner lenses dispensed. They actually make coke-bottle thick lenses in the year 2017! This is Canada, a 1st world nation? You truly wonder whether you're still in Canada the moment you step into their bleak and dirty store. First of all, they claim that the voucher given by the government for OW recipients for complete frames and lenses is worthless (direct quote) They state in a belligerent tone that they receive very little money for it. That is the reason they give you for upcharging $200-300 for decent frames. Each wall showcasing frames has a new and higher upcharge. You are moved along the walls in a darkly comedic way feeling increasingly poor and desperate as you realize you can't afford any frames that won't make u look ridiculous...if you walked down the street in the frames available with your OW voucher complete with coke bottle thick lenses you would literally draw negative attention. Second upcharge: Another $100-200 is for basic thinner lenses Vs coke bottle thickness for those with a higher prescription. They don't even have anti scratch or anti glare features yet it's $100-200. Next is the coercion to pay out of your own pocket as they show u paperwork from previous customers proving that nearly everyone has opted to upgrade an average of $400!!! Either for decent frames and/or thinner lenses in ADDITION to handing in their OW vouchers. Never before have I seen a retailer violate people's privacy by showing you actual customer receipts. There are SO many optical stores in the GTA willing and ready to give significant discounts on lenses and frames to ow recipients with up to 50% off even on latest styles. These vendors are incredibly helpful and courteous and will put in the time to help you look your best for what you can afford. When u quote these prices to city optical they grudgingly pull out a calculator and start applying a small discount to your upcharge. Even with the discount they are not competitively priced! According to City optical staff the government is paying next to nothing for eye care. Another possibility may be that this business, the only one with a government contract for OW is taking the voucher and then scamming disadvantaged and vulnerable people in need of support and assistance. Shameful either way u look at it. Those in need should be treated with dignity. This is a BAD situation that could be vastly improved...vision is an important prerequisite for securing employment...just saying.. My advice is spare yourself the humiliation. Perhaps sometime in the near future OW will reassess this voucher as USELESS and allow you to shop for a bargain at an optical retailer of your choosing vs sending you to this no choice corrupt communist outfit. It saddens me how many amazing, deserving people in need of support and reassurance will be forced to come here and be preyed upon. Good Luck everyone!
