  • Basal Coffee is cool. It's *really* cool. The FreeMoreWest (that's too much to type..) neighborhood previously had Rhino which supplies a lot of fresh beans, and the drivethrough, CupLux, but not a dedicated coffee shop. Enter Basal. Currently there's a lot of construction going around the area, but it'll be right around the corner from some apartments and I'm HELLA jealous. The Lady and I went during their soft opening to a surprisingly full house. There isn't too much seating - in fact, it was all taken when we first showed up. There's a bar you can sit around, a few 2 seaters, a few 4 tops, and some lounge chairs, and that's about it. However, it's a coffee place - just wait and somebody is bound to finish their drink. And that's exactly what happened. Our order: Two Cortados. One Drip. One Crumble Cake. Our impressions: The first thing you notice when you get into Basal Coffee is the decor, it's all very modern, and the serving ware from Sheldon Ceramics is notable as well. Almost everything in the actual shop was made by or refurnished by by women led businesses, which is an incredible mission. Oh, and all pastries are Suarez, which are just incredible. But the coffee was excellent, the pours generous, and the atmosphere incredibly inviting. OH and they have these super cool shaken lattes that are poured into coupe glasses - just in case you want to look like you're drinking something alcoholic at 8am. Never too early. Bryce, the owner, was there working the espresso machines and making sure everything was going smoothly, and it was a pleasure to talk to him and learn about the vision he had. While our order, at $18, was pretty pricey, we did get a lot and the quality of both the drip and cortados could be tasted sip for sip. We can't wait for Basal to be fully opened and to support this LaCa establishment.
