| - This review is for the amazing staff at this Hampton Inn location. Make no mistake...it's an older property, the rooms are small, and there is a bit of a mustiness in the rooms. However...it's rates are very reasonable and it's service is five star plus.
After a disastrous night at another Pgh hotel (with a much more "impressive" name and more expensive per night rate), we had to find another place to stay--and quickly. We were there because of a family member moving into hospice care.
First...the front office staff. I had to stash our luggage at the hotel at 8 am, and get to the hospital. I wasn't even checked in. Tom, a front desk manager, answered the phone and told me to bring my bags and he'd keep them for me til we could check in--even though we couldn't be there til late that night. That's not such a unique thing, right...it gets better. Then he told me they offer a courtesy shuttle (for locations within a 3 mile radius of the property). Their shuttle could take us to the hospital after we dropped off our bags. Wow--and we hadn't even checked in.
A couple hours later, the doctors told us my Mom had to be moved to hospice...at another location, and we should stay at the hospice facility. I called the hotel...they cancelled my reservation for me, and sent the shuttle to pick us up (to retrieve our bags).
Upon discovering why we were riding the shuttle, Tracy, the driver, offered to wait while we got the bags and drive us to the hospice facility...all without charge.
That night the hospice facility let us know that they couldn't really accommodate our staying there, and we should find a hotel. We realized we'd need someplace to be other than hospice, as well, just to rest and recharge. I rebooked the reservation, and then called the local Hampton Inn again. They held a room for us, and told me to call for the shuttle when we had to return. It was late, on a busy Friday (a Regatta event was in town), so Rick, another shuttle driver, apologized that he couldn't come to get us but told me to get a Lyft or taxi, and the hotel would reimburse me the cost. Yes...you read that correctly...even though the shuttle is only a courtesy service (not part of the booking), they did this for us, just as a compassionate gesture for what we were facing. This kind of generous and thoughtful attitude continued for the next five days--whether it was front desk advice, restaurant recommendations, or just caring words, they were "there" for my daughter and me.
Staying at the hotel, it was clear the rest of the staff operate similarly. The housekeeping staff is conscientious--keeping rooms and the public restrooms are clean, and consistently making sure the breakfast area is kept well stocked and clean during breakfast service.
If you need a place to stay in Pittsburgh, PA...book it here.
