Elles forment un groupe de langues important dont les locuteurs se trouvent majoritairement en Europe centrale, dans les Balkans, en Europe de l’Est, en Sibérie, en Extrême-Orient russe et en Asie centrale.Les langues slaves sont généralement divisées sur la base des principes géographique et généalogique en trois branches principales: orientale (qui utilise l’alphabet cyrillique), occidentale (qui utilise l’alphabet latin) et méridionale (qui utilise l’alphabet cyrillique ou latin).Les langues slaves forment une famille relativement homogène et conservatrice en comparaison aux autres familles de langues indo-européennes.
