I've been lucky enough to travel a fair amount and have had my share of experiences at various airports.
The one thing that I will give YYC is free wi-fi. Which is nice to be able to get some work done or whatever you feel the need to do to kill 1-2 hours in an airport. I've never had to wait too long to go through security and the staff is usually friendly.
Pretty much majority of flights are available from Calgary, which is more dependent on the airline, than the airport. They have ample parking, which isn't too expensive, and they have a cell phone waiting area, so if you are picking someone up, you can wait until your passenger has arrived and scoop them up.
One super annoying thing, is the Canadian customs, you have to walk what seems like a few kilometers. I'm not sure the need for this, other than to make passengers irate.
For being the local airport, I am totally fine with flying to and from.
