  • I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this travel clinic. The staff are unprofessional, irresponsible and it is poorly run. Take your business (and health) elsewhere! My husband, infant and I had our consult in the beginning of March 2012 and there was some information that the pharmacist who saw us was going to follow up with me about. I didn't hear back after a month. I called and left messages three different times over the next month regarding this information (it was about malaria prevention medications for my infant and for myself while breastfeeding). I kept getting the voicemail, but continued to leave messages, even if they could just let me know when they could get back to me and that they were indeed looking into it. My call was returned once by the receptionist and she said that they would call me back in two days. They never did. Finally I got through to reception and finally spoke to the pharmacist. It was apparent that she did not look into the information as she said she would because her information was the same as the day we had our consult. She was supposed to compare data for two different preventative malaria medications for my infant and find the safest one for me to take while breastfeeding. She also told me to give the malaria medicine to my exclusively breastfed infant with a spoonful of honey. Infants less than one year are not supposed to have honey... She also told me that public health would give my son Hep B immunization early, which they stated they would not as it was for travel. We had my infant's first Hep B shot on May 18th at 12:45 and had to wait for 10 minutes for the staff to return from their lunch break. Not a big deal. The nurse manager who gave the shot remarked how she had never given a shot to such a young baby. Not reassuring. We made our next appointment for the second shot that day. The nurse manager said she would look up the amount of immunity after 2 shots for us. We had my infant's second Hep B shot June 15th and when we arrived for our appointment they did not have any stock. Furthermore, the nurse manager had not looked up the information for us either. When I asked if they had a pharmacy close by that could supply the vaccine for them for times such as this, she said that the one closest by wouldn't have it (without calling to check) and that I COULD try Safeway. Seriously? Since when is my fault for their lack of preparedness and irresponsibility? She did apologize and said we could rebook for tuesday afternoon and she would order some. She said (with a smirk on her face) sometimes these things happen and there was nothing she could do. I expressed my frustration and asked whether they had some sort of check to ensure that patients would get their vaccine when the appointment was clearly booked a month in advance. Isn't there some sort of way to ensure you have stock for the planned patients you are seeing? She said they do have a system in place. I doubt it. Two weeks before our trip I started arranging to pick up the prescriptions that should have been faxed over or called in to my pharmacy after the phone conversation in April. My pharmacy had no record of such prescriptions. Perhaps their error, but perhaps the travel clinic's as well. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this travel clinic. The staff are unprofessional, irresponsible and it is poorly run. Take your business (and health) elsewhere! That is, unless you like to leave multiple messages on voicemail, show up to appointments and have to wait for the staff, or that they don't have stock of your vaccine, or that they say they will look into something for you and they don't. If a health care professional says they are going to do something, they should do it. If a clinic is going to book an immunization appointment, they should have stock of your vaccine, especially when it is booked well in advance. I do not think that is too much to ask. Good riddance Bowmont Travel clinic.
