  • At first, I really thought I was going to love this restaurant. The decor was trendy, inviting, and had plenty of space. (I'm sure when the weather is nice, the outdoor seating is a huge plus, too) The drink menu looked interesting and had a large selection of hand selected beer on tap that the manager told us is updated monthly. Everything on the menu looked great; there were also a ton of great looking sides. Even the menus themselves looked good. And obviously, who doesn't love BBQ? Our beer came - I had the Bourbon Barrel Stout which is now very high on my favorite beer list. This dark beer had a ton of flavor but was not too heavy. Sarah also had a really good honey beer. Then things started to go downhill. We passed on appetizers b/c the entrees came with two sides. And although we were watching the game and not in a hurry, the food was quite slow. Our manager/waiter told us we just happened to get behind two large tables...No problem, however this was the first day of spring break on campus and the place was less than 1/3 full - how do they keep up on full days? When the food came, overall it was average. The positives: 1. Mac n cheese - top notch 2. The three sauces: A BBQ place can be made or broke by its sauces. A molasses based, a vinegar based, and a mustard BBQ were all different and very good. And complemented the different meats well. Negatives: 1. They serve the cornbread cold. Who does that?? It would have been pretty good, but I've never eaten cold cornbread! 2. My "Spicy green beans" were not spicy and were too crunchy - not even al dente. 3. Sweet potato salad although looked nice, the potatoes were also not evenly cooked. Some tender, some almost raw. Would have preferred if served warm. 4. All the "hot" food was just above warm and cooled off way to fast, possibly because it was quite cold in there. They may consider heating the plates, getting the food out quicker, or something else creative. I had the meat combo: Chose the sausage and pulled pork. The sausage came with one spicy and one smoked served with pickled peppers. Pulled pork was good, but not amazing. Sarah had the chicken - moist and pretty good. (Since I'm a sucker for dessert,) I finished off with the pecan tart because the manager said they have their own pastry chef. Well, there were only 4 desserts on the menu, which made me feeling like that chef is probably overpaid, but... Anyway, the tart came and was OK, but again, served cold. Everyone knows pecan pie is best warm. The custard that it was supposed to be served with, was nothing more than a smear of melted custard - yikes!! Overall, we left feeling the food - which actually makes the restaurant - was just A-OK. However, we'll maybe come back to try out the outdoor seating in the summer.
