| - First time here. As a Vegas local, I usually try to avoid the Strip places, as from what I've seen they're usually overpriced tourist traps. I'm glad to say I was pleasantly surprised by Citizens. I had been considering Citizens as an after-concert choice (Neil Diamond!), since it's open 24 hours. We arrived at Mandalay Bay early and had an hour and a half to kill, so we decided to eat before the show instead.
After checking out the menu board outside and getting on the list, we waited about 3 minutes and we were seated in the outer "patio" area. Our server, Nick, greeted us very shortly thereafter and brought us our drinks, offering to answer any questions we had about the menu sections. I decided against spending $40 on a 14 oz NY sirloin steak and went with the bacon burger (medium done, add cheese, hold the onions) & fries. My wife chose the NY-style pastrami sandwich. Being that it was 5:45 pm, I expected to wait a bit for my order to come out. After 15 minutes or so Nick came back to the table and apologized for the wait, explaining that they were very busy and that he would see to our orders ASAP. I thought that was really cool of him, because I cannot tell how many times I have been sitting in a restaurant, getting aggravated looking at my watch over and over, while the wait staff hangs around chatting or walks by us over and over like we haven't been sitting there sipping our drinks for over a half hour. The food arrived a few minutes later and it was time to dig in.
My burger platter, served on what looked like a cookie sheet, was the perfect size for the $20 price tag: a good-size, nicely stacked burger with tomato and shredded lettuce, cooked and prepared exactly as I had requested and skewered through the top bun with a large pepperoncini that would make Papa John cry, a decently-sized "bucket" of shoestring fries and a half pickle slice. My wife's equally-priced sandwich was huge (the half she couldn't finish wound up in the car in a to-go box before we went to the show), stuffed with perfectly lean pastrami, along with a side bowl of potato salad (or fries or cole slaw) and also sporting that pepperoncini and pickle slice. Both orders were delicious and appropriately priced for the portions we received. When it came time to settle the bill, I jokingly asked if they do employee discounts for fellow MGM employees, to which Nick said he would go check. He returned a couple of minutes later with, to my surprise, a new bill reflecting a 20% discount (which I kicked back to Nick on top of the original tip for his great service) - a definite high-five to Citizens for that!
All in all, I still generally think Strip dining establishments are tourist traps, but I also think they have not yet seen the last of me at Citizens - it seemed to be, at least to me, one of the few exceptions to the rule.
