| - Firstly, I just want to explain the process I was going through to find a few good suppliers. I am a very avid home cook, love hosting fun get-togethers with friends, but also I really focus on great quality meats (& other ingredients). No question, it is easy to find good quality meat around Toronto, yet the prices don't quite justify it. I understand completely, I want all good quality businesses to make money, and to justify downtown Toronto rent - it's no surprise that prices need to be a bit higher.
Now to Black Angus... I have known about Black Angus Fine Meats & Game for many years, as almost every week (sat mornings) I have heard about them on the Outdoor Journal radio show. The show gives a quick snippet on the store, but doesn't do it justice. After listening for a few years, I finally decided to make the short drive to the Mississauga location. They are advocates of amazing "game" meats (which I love, and many great health benefits), but I was there looking for the barebones meat, BEEF. Although they really push the game meats, and I know (from restaurant contacts), they are THE premier source for game meats, that's not why I was there. Truth is, they have some of the best beef ( and traditional?) meats at prices that put any other retailer to shame, from my experience. They dry age beef (in a very simple display), offer incredible grass-fed meat, and will essentially cut anything you need.
The best part of this story is, not only do I feel like I am getting great value - I have been to many butcher shops, and Black Angus ranks in the top tier.
I hope this helps people in the west end looking for a quality butcher! Plus, I have also tried many of the game meats and it's so much fun experimenting with new meats. Give it a try!!
