  • A superior stay compared to the run down Wyndham Desert Rose Resort I accidentally stayed in while attending a tradeshow at the Mandalay. It was the only family sized room close by, and for sore some bizarre reason gets great reviews. No one should stay at the Desert Rose until after a remodel... Meanwhile, THIS hotel actually deserves the good reviews. Great location. Only a stone's throw down the street from the excellent Las Vegas Blvd Whole Foods (one of the best in the nation) and the locals oriented Town Square shopping center. Not much further down is the Mandalay, Luxor, etc. The north end of the strip. Again, this is a real resort. Maybe not quite as posh as the ones aimed more squarely at adult audiences in Vegas, but this is a great place for the entire family. Even some adults go alone or with other adults (but keep in mind, you should like or at least not mind children to stay here happily). Enormous sized, family friendly pool with beach. If memory serves, quite like the pool at Hard Rock, minus the cabanas. Adult beverages for full grown humans, should that be your thing. They'll even turn a coconut into a monkey looking thing in which to hold your beverage... and when it's done, it bizarrely doubles as a coin bank. hahaha :) Lazy river adventure! All kinds of scheduled activities every day from bath bomb and rainmaker creation. All included. A couple of movie nights a week. Free airhockey! Adults love this one, too. Shuttle bus to the Tropicana and Mirage. On weekend, to Town Square, too. Modest $13 a day resort fee which includes everything, including wifi. So you don't get any big surprises on your bill. In fact, I think the only "surprise" was I got was a damage deposit, which is returned at the end. But that's even too surprising. I had the gorgeous, nearly 1000 sq foot Bora Bora room for almost embarrassingly little money. It had a dining table for four, seating for 3 at the kitchen bar, a nearly full scale kitchen, two decent sized TVs and an entertainment center, comfortable King bed, sofa bed, jetted tub and even a steam shower -- much like the ones they have in the posh suites you get for the Sundance Festival in Park City. Really nice! Simply superior in almost every way compared to places like Residence Inn (Marriott has gone far downhill, anyway), and even the better family friendly brands such as Hyatt House and Homewood Suites. The steam shower only comes with the larger rooms, but I recommend it highly because it's hard to stay well hydrated in Vegas. There's nothing quite as hydrating as massively humid air, which is why you can get away with drinking so little water -- yet still feel like a fish -- in places like Florida. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 for a couple of reasons this property could easily fix with time: 1. It took several hours to get our room. They said they'd call or text when ready, but we never received a message. Checked back in at their recommend time of 4pm. When they gave the room to us, it wasn't described as on the tin. At all. No jetted tub, no steam shower, aged carpet. Different look entertainment system than in pictures. (still superior to the Wyndham "Resort" I stayed at for the trade show, however!) It took maybe a additional hour to exchange for the proper room. Due to the size of the property, I think it took until 6 or 6:30 to really get our stuff in. So check in was a bit of a pain in the butt. They were nice the whole way along, but time is time. I'm not in Vegas forever, and I have things to do. 1b. Conversely, they make you check out really early. 10am. That can be difficult if you have an injured member of your party (my hubby is partially disabled), which more and more common as America gets progressively sicker from crap quality food, pollution, etc. Why it's 10am, when I mostly see cleaning people not in the morning -- but mostly after 1pm, I don't know. I even see cleaning folks at 4. Occasionally even 5 and 6pm. It would've made more sense if I saw cleaning people hustle earlier. I think they could adjust this, or at least SELL later checkouts for more $$. As long as the price isn't too crazy, I'd be happy to pay. 2. The steam shower smelled awful when first opening it. Kind of like old sewage. Yuck! I had a small ozonator in my car that I keep in there for chemical spills at work. So I wouldn't have to wait for maintenance to do basically the same thing, I aimed that at the shower and used it twice on a timer while we were out. No more problem. I'm guessing they get this odor because there's no venting in the shower itself. So please, everyone, please keep the shower door open when you're done. Closing it after using steam will breed some really bad bugs. All in all, a great place. Company has mastered cost controls. Certainly worth more than they often ask it, but I understand how competitive this market is here. I just hope next time I stay that it's easier to get the room I signed on for.
