  • Oh Food Lion. Despite the fact that it is less than two minutes from where I live I always avoided going there. The few times I did run in was when I needed some last minute thing while in the middle of cooking, and the experiences then didn't cause me any joy. However, with the closure of Lowes Foods, and not wanting to rely on Harris Teeter for all our food shopping, Food Lion has become a weekly stop. I definitely count Food Lion lower on the quality scale than any other grocery chain in our area. The produce section is extremely limited and the deli doesn't offer Boars Head cold cuts (the only kind I'll eat.) I also don't like the lack of a proper butcher and seafood department, and would not purchase a steak or anything like that that. Another point against them is their insistence of using a "Blockbuster" box instead of Red Box. It would be such a convenient Red Box location for me but instead I have to drive down Sam Furr a ways and deal with traffic. The service is also extremely slow. There is rarely more than one cashier open at a time, and I think all their cashiers are zombies. They are all slow and inpersonal...you'll be lucky if you get a "hello" or "braaaaaainnnnnnnsssssss" out of them. Yet Food Lion is good for one thing, and that's the prices. While the produce selection is lacking, the fruit and veggies tend to be cheaper than those at Harris Teeter. Some other weekly staples that we purchase are cheaper here as well, so we'll deal with lame service to save a few bucks. Food Lion is a necessary evil. While I'm a huge fan of Harris Teeter, their prices are not always top notch. I'm more than willing to pay more for quality meats and produce, but there's no point in spending an extra dollar or two on stuff like popcorn and pita wraps. The services may not be the stuff dreams are made of but it is worth it in order to save some cashola.
