  • Boy, I thought I was going to be the first one to write a review of this place...I guess this Pep Boys is so terrible someone else beat me to it. I had two tires replaced in Philadelphia 2 weeks prior to heading back to Pittsburgh to visit my family...while in Pittsburgh, I discovered that I had a nail in one of the old tires and I figured I would replace it and the other tire and just have all new tires. I needed the job done quick because I was leaving to come back to Philadelphia later that day. I figured Pep Boys could handle it...my brother warned me not to...he was right. I waited way too long to have two tires installed...seriously, there was no one else there that day but yet it took 3 - 4 hours - even after I told them I was in a hurry. After I got my car back...I drove it 10 minutes to my parents house (to pack up my things and leave) and once I got out of the car, I immediately noticed the white scuff marks over the front passenger-side quarter panel...I bent down to rub them out with my shirt when I noticed the golf ball sized dent in the door with two horizontal gouges (about 2 inches long each) that nearly went all the way through the paint into the metal. Further examination revealed scratches from that dent in the door forward to the bumper. I called Pep Boys immediately, they told me to come back. An older woman reviewed the damage and told me to get two estimates for repairs and that they would "take care of it." I went back to Philadelphia, upset with the damage but reaffirmed that Pep Boys would do the responsible thing and pay for the repairs. During the course of spending an entire day getting the estimates, I found out that state law only required me to get one estimate...not two. I still got two estimates, faxed them over to this Pep Boys location and even said I was willing to take it to the shop with the lower estimate. I got no response... I called later that week and was transferred to a new individual who was supposedly the service manager...I don't want to put his name down here because I'm not trying to be malicious...but this guy wasn't friendly. I'll save you the long story and just tell you that he called me a "con artist." Yes, after a careful explanation of the situation and even a step-by-step of how I believe the damage was done (too long to explain here), he screamed at me and called me a "con artist." After I told him he was out of line he said he and his crew were not responsible or liable for the repairs and hung up...hung up on me. Can you believe that? His allegation was that it was a door ding...caused in their parking lot. A parking lot that was completely empty on the Sunday morning after July 4th... Long story-short, I ended up calling the Pep Boys corporate office, filing a Better Business Bureau complaint and filing a claim with my insurance agency. The Pep Boys corporate office (which is interestingly located in Philadelphia) agreed to pay my deductible ($100) and I had my insurance cover the repairs...I'm not sure what conversations State Farm had with Pep Boys (if any) but I made it clear to State Farm that this wasn't a simple door ding and the shape, type, direction and extent of the damage made that fact obvious. I promised myself, I would never go to another Pep Boys again. This location ruined the entire franchise for me. I'm pretty young and I take very good care of my vehicles...Pep Boys has lost out on thousands and thousands of dollars in potential sales because of this incident. It was simply unacceptable. If you need tires - go to a tire place or Costco...if you need repairs go to Life Time Auto on Forward Ave.
