  • Located inside the City Athletic Club on W. Sahara near Buffalo, the Bodi Cafe had been on our radar for a while now since the b/f and I knew that two of its co-owners were professional bodybuilders, Iris Kyle and Hide Yamagishi. One day last week, Mel and I were at a gym on the other side of town and, lo and behold, Ms. Kyle was there, too, with all of her glorious muscles. "Look, Mel! It's Iris Kyle! Look at her legs! Her quads are massive!" We tried not to stare at her as she was working on the lying leg curl machine in front of us, but it's not every day this happens. After all, she's been Ms. Olympia 11 times, a female bodybuilding legend. Just Google her and you'll see. So, of course, I had to go talk to her. "Uh, Ms. Kyle, I'm a big fan." I said something like that and then I was just going to leave her alone since she probably gets approached all the time by nerds like me. But then she asked me my name and then we started chatting about competing, workouts, and Bodi Cafe. Long story long, I told her the b/f and I would stop by the cafe later that day and we did. Iris was there armed with a selfie stick to take a group picture of us. Apparently she loves her selfie stick and is very social on social media, just like she is in real life. I had her signature Ms Olympia Energy Bomb smoothie the first time we went: chocolate whey protein, banana, strawberry, blueberry, and oatmeal. Loaded with 40g of protein, it was definitely much tastier than my plain old whey shake--thanks, fruit! The second time we went, I tried the Body Builder since it's lower carb: soy milk, banana, chocolate whey protein, and creatine. The shakes can be modified according to your dietary needs if you need more or less carbs or protein. Add-ins for .99 include creatine, l-glutamine, immune support, fat burner, whey or soy protein, espresso beans, and more. The cafe also has other nutritional supplements, snacks, and drinks for sale, including Quest and Oh Yeah bars, Lenny and Larry's cookies, Isopure, Lana's Egg Whites, pre-packaged protein meals with nutrition info listed, and the like. On Tuesdays, all shakes are only $5 for either the 20 oz or 32 oz; that's a bargain considering that the supplements included in many of them cost much more. The b/f's favorite smoothie, the Italian Phoenix, has 6 egg whites along with all of the other stuff. We'll probably be here on Tuesdays a lot. Thanks for being so friendly, Iris--she's definitely a world-class athlete without an ego. Maybe you'll see her when you drop by, too--get ready to smile for the selfie stick. * You don't have to be a member of City Athletic to go to the cafe. We went to our gym for a workout first then headed here for our post-workout smoothies.
