| - I just want to say I had high hopes for this place, but left extremely disappointed. I was looking for a new tattoo artist as mine had retired, and when I found Gypsy Tattoo Parlor I thought I struck gold. Their website has a real positive vibe and the artists all have amazing portfolios. I am a person of research and really look in to every detail before settling on a decision especially when making one as great as getting a permanent piece of art on my body. I initially emailed one of their artists Kate whom I chose to do my tattoo, almost 2 weeks prior to my set appointment. I explained how I was driving over an hour for the appointment and took the liberty to draw the tattoo that I wanted with precision and explained how everything was exact except for a few modifications to the artistic effects on certain images that I wanted. She appreciated the detail and scheduled me the appointment at which I paid a $60 deposit for her to hold (which I didn't mind at all) and that would be deducted for the final cost of the tattoo.
Well, today I had my appointment. I woke up early, drove the hour and half it took to get there, showed up 10min early (I was scheduled for 11am) she however was not on time, which of course things happen i get it. I didn't mind that part either. What I really found to be the first red flag was the fact that I sat and waited over an hour for her to draw up a tattoo that I had sent her the details for many days before. This makes my 13th tattoo and the only one I had to wait for to be drawn up. The money I paid to reserve that appointment at a specific time should atleast include a couple hours to prepare yourself for the day of. But I guess costumer satisfaction isn't the main concern here. And I found that out to be a proven fact at the end.
To shorten this up, my tattoo looks nothing like I wanted it to look like. It took approx 40min to do which included the resizing and replacing of it after I addressed the first concern I had with it not looking right; to give an idea of how small this tattoo is. After she finished she tells me it'll cost $120. Which included the $60 I had already paid, making this a $180 tattoo that didn't even take a full hour to do. It's literally a triangle and small circles with a "lotus" at the bottom. One of my tattoos I already have takes up most of my upper leg and took 3 hours to do costed me a little over what she charged me for this one. So I didn't expect to pay more than $100 total for this tattoo..
I brought to her my concern about the price because their website says $100-$150 an hour (starting when ink touches skin) depending on detail. But $180 is charging me $30 more than the most their website says it would for a full hour when the tattoo didn't even take that long.
She told me that a certain amount goes to the shop and a certain amount goes to herself based off of the price of the tattoo. So basically she over charged me to ensure she got a decent cut. After I told her I wasn't going to jip her on a tip (which I work in the tipping industry I would of taken good care of her even after the flukes in the beginning) she took off $20 and charged me $160 for the tattoo, which is still over the max amount they charge for a tattoo an hour. Regardless, I still tipped her and thanked her because In the end her greed and lack of seeing her customers as more than just that and not as human beings who are getting permanent meaningful pieces on their bodies, plants her karmic path.
After leaving this shop I noticed how her lack of caring reflected on to my tattoo and I instantly called up my retired tattoo artist from town and he is going to fix it as soon as it heals.
Money is money. The cost I paid is not the main focus of this review. I am writing this review, as my first one ever, because something so meaningful to me was overruled by the money she was going to receive from it. It took me a couple months to put together a piece that truly meant a lot to me with specific symbols in certain places that meant something to me personally and it pains me to now have such a negative impact attached to it. The lines don't match up, the circles and proportions are uneven, the tattoo itself isn't even centered. All things that are going to be fixed by someone else who actually cares about what I care about.
If you are looking for a place to get a quick meaningless tattoo than Gypsy Tattoo Parlor is just for you. Kate's portfolio is really good, but it's obvious that the care for her work only extends to a select few.
I made my drawing at the size that I wanted it, I placed it in the position I wanted it and told her the only things that needed changed was making the lotus look more artistic, I need 7 circles descending instead of 6 that I drew and that the eye I wanted to look more realistic as an 'all seeing eye' I got none of that.
