  • District American Kitchen and Wine Bar, a very nicely décored restaurant on the main floor of the Sheraton Grand Phoenix Hotel, comes up a little short in some respects. Lunch specials are from 12-3PM where anything on the center page of the menu is $9. However, all items on the menu sides are normal priced. For what you get, the $9 price is fair. I've been here twice, both times for lunch. The inside is very nice, bright with sunlight, and spacious. Seating is comfortable and the staff is friendly. The "Golden" Calamari (lightly battered in tapioca flour and fried) was excellent, though I didn't care for dipping it in the seasoned [gremolata] olive oil (who does that?) or the aioli sauce. If the calamari was grilled, then the "gremolata" makes sense, not when it's fried and already has oil on it. I'm no chef though, so I could be way off! The calamari by itself was indeed very good. The Po'Boy Shrimp Sandwich left much to be desired. The shrimp, tomato, and coleslaw combo was tasty, but it needed more shrimp (i.e. substance) to make up for the thick bread. If this sandwich was eaten after paying full price ($14), I would have been EXTREMELY disappointed. The Cedar-Roasted Pacific Salmon and Risotto is good (all gluten-free), but again, it's lacking something--taste!!! Normal price is $15. The glazing on the salmon is very light. The risotto had good texture but lacked that something extra to kick it up a notch on the old taste buds!* Overall, all of it could be improved. *NOTE: my taste buds are fully functional, if not over-functional. :-) So my advice? If you're downtown, then try District for lunch or dinner, but keep your expectations grounded. Personally, the (hotel) bar looks awesome. I'd much rather hang out there!
