  • Ali Baba's Middle Eastern Cuisine is right Downtown Toronto, close to Ryerson University and Eaton Centre. I was craving for shawarma the other day, found this nearby and popped in! I read on Yelp that Ali Baba's gave student discounts so I casually asked about it at the cash. They do give student discounts! The lady at the cash was really sweet and nice to explain the deals to me. For student discount meals: A Shawarma wrap + Pop is $6. A Wrap with fries and Pop is $7. & a Shawarma Platter with fries is about $10 I believe. I got a Falafel Shawarma Wrap + Pop for $6 flat! They don't add tax which is awesome. Falafel is a deep-fried ball or patty that is made out of ground chickpeas, fava beans or both. Reading the description, falafel seems like a vegetarian item. I have no idea what fava beans are, but this was my first time trying Falafel and I liked it! Would totally get it again, but definitely, would have to add some spicy sauce next time for more flavour. +++ I usually get Chicken when I order Shawarmas but I did try their Falafel one as well. I usually get everything in my shawarma except tomatoes. I love turnips in my shawarmas! Totally adds a tasty crunch to it. I also tend to get all the sauces and spicy sauce as well. When I order shawarmas, I leave it up to the server to prompt me questions and I'll answer them accordingly. Heehee! The service at Ali Baba's is so friendly and fun each time! Each employee there is always so lively! They ask questions about you and definitely interact with each customer. Their service here is 10/10 for sure. Though I do wish they upgrade their store environment a little. Their seating is pretty dinky - there is a table in the front that fits 6 on a stool. And there's just bar sitting at the back but it looks really nasty and their tables don't look the cleanest either. They also open up their sliding doors when the weather is warmer which is nice but I also see flies coming in. I don't mind their environment that much since I usually take my food to-go and eat elsewhere but I do see some people eating inside. But $6 for a shawarma wrap and a pop is definitely a steal, especially in the downtown core! This meal always fills me up and is one of the perks of being a student for sure.
