| - 4 years and 700 reviews later.. This place is still awesome. This is coming from the picky, non-beef/pork eater who can find a few items to love--think grilled cheese with chicken skin cracklin and truffle, whaaa! The place itself is really open with a massive bar smack dab in the middle. It's done in a more airy, classic style, especially compared to its train wreck Butcher sister. It's also exactly what you expect, topped with Edison bulbs, large, plush chairs, and the clean-lined bar top. Not nearly as stuffy as it definitely could have been.
The most recent adventure to Meat and Potatoes was for brunch. +1 called for reservations (make reservations, really), showed up, and we were immediately seated in the crawl space for parties of two along the wall. I clearly first got my seasonal bellini on, which at the time was some type of pineapple. Ooooh, damn. There's also the bloody mary bar which everyone raves about; if my nebbing skills are anything, it did look a bit extensive and cool.
I, of course, ordered the french toast. Sugar bread and booze! It's brunch! But this french toast was different. Sourdough but tender, served in a huge bowl, topped with almond brittle. It was almost caramelized and incredible. Enough to almost make me forget the starter of granola and fruit. The pile of goodness was topped with honey and a sweet ricotta I still can't get over. The guy inhaled his huevos ranchero, but allowed me to carefully remove a pile of egg, salsa, and black bean that was just spicy enough for all the flavor it gave. Pair that with the roasted pork it was served with, and +1 actually cleared his plate.
Okay, so maybe I didn't have meat nor potatoes, but it shows how anyone can get into the newer wave of frou frou downtown dining with the original. It's the only logical place to start (with a bellini or two).
