  • It's amazing how much Vegas has changed in just a few years. In relative terms, Las Vegas used to be a "decent buy"...if you didn't go crazy gambling, you could find decent hotel, restaurant and show prices. They used to want to encourage you to come so that you would spend your money at the gaming tables. Now they take every opportunity to gouge you. We were 1 1/2 hrs early for check-in...we arrived at 3 pm...not eggregiously early. We were told that it would be $30 extra to check in early. Also, and I am having trouble remembering the long list of extras...$30 per night for an extra person in our room (our four year old daughter), $30 per night for a rollaway bed, $25 per night for a refrigerator. When we checked out, we also discovered that the resort fee of $30 a night was not included in our rate...therefore, we were charged $15 a night for internet! We were offered a "bargain upgrade" to a suite for an additional $200 a night. If we took this, the other fees would magically go away. Well, we had just flown in and had gotten up at 2am, so we were basically zombies at this point. We agreed to be "upgraded". Unfortunately, this meant giving up our room in the nice Augustus tower for the suite in the Forum tower. This turned out to be pretty old and decrepit...the renovations amounted to little more than slapping lipstick on a pig. Our suite was huge, but pretty sparsely furnished. Wallpaper was peeling from the walls, the AC unit in the ceiling was dripping condensation onto our table, and it really felt kind of depressing. For half of our stay, we couldn't even get robes and slippers...I had called down to customer service and they CLAIMED that they did not provide such amenities. Bullshit. On my fourth try, I finally got someone who cheerfully sent them up. WTF???? Caesars seems to be one of the "in" places of the moment, and there is a lot to like. But these things really piss me off. Next year, we have another conference here...I will be sure not to make the same rookie mistakes in the future.
