| - Let me preface this by saying, yes I understand the stigma surrounding commercial gyms, and that if you're looking for specified training in certain sports, globo gyms are probably not your prime destination. Commercial gyms are convenient and we stopped here while visiting town.
So...
World health promotes that they have equipment geared towards Olympic weightlifting ie bumper plates (meant to be dropped) and platforms to lift on. The absurdity in this is that the unqualified trainers, who say stuff like "if you can clean it, you shouldn't have to drop it.", enforce a blanket policy that you can't drop the weights... ON THE PLATFORM.
To train Olympic lifting properly, you are supposed to train only the concentric and to avoid eccentric.
The trainers say stuff like "catch the weight and put it down slowly after a clean, jerk or snatch". Not only would this make the training less effective, it is also dangerous to catch a near maximal effort Olympic lift on the way down. It's dangerous for the shoulder joint, dangerous to your back. Your knees can also get clipped during this process leading to a severe knee injury. It is very clear in the sport that you are supposed to drop the weight after performing the lift. Simply put, It is MEANT TO BE DROPPED.
It's like you have people who have never participated in the sport, telling people how they should train.
