| - Totally in love with Red Rock! I was a little skeptical at first being 30 minutes away from the strip and having to pay $7. There are 19 different trails (http://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/lasvegas/hikes-trails/) , but I can't say all of them are marked correctly. The children's discovery trail led us to nowhere land. I would totally just skip it.
However, the very first station, Calico I is a must stop. This trail itself showcases the age of red rock in picturesque form with its history and aged geology. Lots of great picture moments and if you want to pick only one out of the 19 trails, do the Calico Tanks hike. It's only 2.5 miles and it's family friendly. This moderate level hike will share different elevations makes sure you have a decent workout.
Of course, make sure you have water to stay hydrated, a big hat for shade, and suntan lotion. Might be good to also have a snack or two, a camera, and a phone or walkie talkie so the group doesn't accidentally get separated.
The drive along the road is one way and once you enter you will have to make the 13 mile loop. Along the way, you'll share the road with cyclists and lots of dry vegetation along the conservation area. And since this is a conservation area, please do not leave trash and items difficult to decompose.
We came during June, around 10am and it does feel like it's in the 90s when it was high 80s. Do start early if you can. Red Rock Casino is within 15 minutes of the entrance and they have a decent lunch buffet for $9. So come and explore the other beauty of Vegas.
