| - Threats, fear, and manipulation are the favored techniques of "behavior management" for Dr. Olga. This is her version of stellar pediatric relations.
Given that the first thing I told her was about my son's traumatic surgery 6 months ago, I would've expected a deeper level of empathy. Instead, the opposite was the case.
I did appreciate the hygienist. She quickly developed a rapport with my son. Unfortunately, she was not allowed to continue the cleaning, as Dr. Olga quickly stepped in the moment my son demonstrated "behavior" she deemed in appropriate. Said behavior was trying to get the toothpaste flavor out of his mouth by sticking his tongue out and wiping it with his dental bib. Solution: ask what flavor he'd prefer before going into it. That's what happens with adults. Why not offer the same respect to kids? And how is that "behavior" so unacceptable? Good grief, he's four, this is only his third time to a dentist, the last time, as I stated, was a terribly traumatic experience. Instead of solving the problem, Dr. Olga moved the hygienist out of the way, took over the cleaning (which was going fine, by the way), physically moved my son's head to look at her (which one would NEVER do to an adult, but again, her version of "behavior management" seems to be nothing but childism, which is especially gross given this is a pediatric office), and excessively sternly told him that she would make me go out of the room if he didn't stop doing what he was doing. (What was that again? Oh, ya, he stuck out his tongue to get the flavor off. Ooooooo. What an awful child!) She made that threat twice before I put a stop to it. Again, never would someone tell a phobic adult patient that their comfort measure would be removed if they didn't shape up. I expect more respect for children in a place supposedly specializing in children. She then went on to continue to be excessively stern with him and telling him how to feel and how to express his feelings. Understandably, this only upset him to the point that he was crying uncontrollably. She then went on to tell me it had nothing to do with her actions, rather me forecasting my emotions to him. Ya, kids often cry because their mom is holding their hand. No, kids cry when they're almost being yelled at during a time of grave anxiety and fear. Huh. Imagine that.
I went from being a PVPD proponent, having referred more than one person, to now being a former client. Never again will my son sit through that level of disrespect.
Further, Dr. Olga repeatedly tried to preach to me about good child psychology being her version of "behavior management." Sadly for her, my husband and I are both teachers, so we're well versed and educated in child psychology and never, not ever would ANY psychologist worth their weight in gold recommend scaring the living crap out of a child in order to develop a rapport and strong level of respect needed for a good relationship between doctor and patient. Sure, threatening them will scare them into potentially freezing long enough to sit still and shut up, but the long term effect will only be created long-term phobias. Maybe she's not interested in the long-term, but I, as his parent, am.
