| - My family and I went to this AMC for the "Full Meal Deal." The theater is located across the street from the upscale Biltmore shopping center in the Esplanade (also high end). Many people are familiar with the crossroads of 24th street and Camelback, as it tends to have a bit of snob appeal.
We parked in the Esplanade garage with the turn in being off of the west side of 24th street. You do need to grab a parking ticket, which will be validated for 4 hours at the theater ticket counter inside the theater, after paying or showing your valid movie tickets. Please make sure your parking is properly validated, as they use Archaic validation machines that forced me to return to the theater after the movie was over. This means I had to go all the way down to the parking garage (with family in tow) and back up to the theater on the second floor of the Esplanade (The escalators are often shut down, as they were Monday night).
The entrance to the theater is nice with a view of the full bar right as you walk in the doors. There are approx 15-20 seats at the bar. I don't imbibe, so cheers to all of you who do. The ticket counter is actually split in two with the bar to your back, yes there's only two lines for tickets. This should come as no surprise, as this theater doesn't have massive amounts of coach seats crammed together. The approach in this theater is to give each movie goer space to eat, as they watch the movie.
Seats in this AMC are not reclining seats, which is why this is a 4 star theater vs a 5 star. The seats are very comfortable and come with a sunken drink holder (very handy) as well as a swiveling tray that your food sits on. Each seat is preset as a table in a restaurant would be, minus any wine glasses, plates or a breadbasket. You will find silverware wrapped in a cloth napkin, along with a main food and dessert menu, full bar menu and a third menu that contains specialty drinks, deserts and monthly food specials. After making your selections simply push the red button over your right or left shoulder, depending on where you're seated.
The experience was a 7 out of 10 and with a few modifications it could be a 10 out of 10. Here's how you fix what's holding this theater back.
When a movie is set to start at 9:00pm and starts at 9:42pm, there's a problem. We've all have grown to accept the obligatory 15-20 minutes of previews, not a marathon of 42 minutes (I'm not kidding). Yes while everyone is ordering and waiting for their food, the trailers play and play, all while the theater is pitch black and everyone is trying to use their cell phones to read the menus. Those who order early, are looking on with contempt at those who are still using their bright cellphone lights and interrupting the punctual movie goers that love their 42 minute trailer viewing experience.
Why not require everyone to preorder their food and be ready to get things going in a timely organized, no cell phone light needed manner? While the movie is playing, why not do what the car companies have done? Simply have the dim lights that allow you to see what's going on when your hands are close to them. This solves the problem with orders during the movie.
The seats are plush and rock back and forth slightly, but as said, THEY DON'T RECLINE! Why can't you make these seats recline? Consolidated Theaters in Hawaii (Specifically "The Ward Center,") has reclining seats with swivel trays, copy them and leap forward.
The food was actually not bad. That being said, it wasn't that good either and they were out of several dessert items (even though I should skip dessert).
I really did enjoy the overall experience, but there's absolutely room for change, it needs to happen.
