| - Talking to the staff, the old manager(prior to 3 weeks ago) was fired for mishandling patrons, this might be the source of a lot of these bad reviews, from people who dealt with him.
I give this pace a solid 4 Stars, but my Yelp rating is to help offset the bad reviews here. Note, a 5 star upscale is not a 5 star budget hotel, they must be rated according to their price category and compared to other hotels in that pricec range. People are definitely marking this place low because its not a Hilton.
I question the rating here on Yelp, 1.5 stars? What the heck? I will explain why it's idiotic below. I've been to a lot of hotels and this hotel is not in any way shape or form the worst(That award would likely go to the Tacoma, WA Econo Lodge, no security, people peddling drugs, people screaming at all hours of the night, rude staff, stains on carpet and furniture, fixtures missing, water stains on cieling), in fact it was quite good for a $50 hotel room in a sketchy part of Phoenix.
First off, this hotel is in a sketchier area of Phoenix, BUT they do have armed security on staff, and they are completely on top of things, second, the hotel just changed managers a week ago, but the new manager was very attentive, despite some very rude customers, I mean very rude. Third, they just got a new card programming machine for hotel key cards and it may have issues, there was some issues with our cards not working more than a day at a time, but the staff was very polite and helpful and fixed it everytime and apologised. Fourth, they had to completely drain the pool the day we arrived and it won't be back up and running for 2-3 more days(1-14-17 is today), not sure what happened, but they were getting it fixed asap, was I disappointed? Yes, but i'm going to assume it was unsanitary and I'd rather have no pool than a gross one. Fifth, because of some security issues(I'm guessing theft), they had to stop holding bags, a big inconvenience, but look, would you want to leave your bags knowing that? Uh no. They were again polite about it. Despite the fact that nearly every patron wanted their bags held and yelled at the receptionist when they were not able too. I'm gonna be blunt! Its you're problem notb their's if you're that rude excuse me but there are bigger issues then having to lug your bags around, show some courtesy people!!! If you were one of those yelling at her I sure hope that when someone screams at you like you screamed at her, you'll think about it real hard before being a jerk like that again. Sixth, I also watched people get seriously bent out of shape over breakfast because they misread the agreement. They kept breakfast very full though, constantly restocking, which was better than I've seen at any other cheap motel hands down. I have never been to a hotel where the patrons were SO RUDE, and yet the staff was still very compassionate and cared, they were exhausted and clearly emotionally spent, but still cared. I stay in hotels about 40 days out of the year for business, I have seen what bad service looks like, and this was not it. The weekend I was there was a Murphy Laws weekend, and yet they held it together.
Bottom line, I felt for the $50 a night on the weekend I spent, it was above expectations, the problems that arose were minor and out of their control.
The rooms are old, yes, clearly things are being slowly updated, but was well-maintained, the maids were friendly and on top of things, the hotel was clean, the parking lot was regularly swept by security to keep out drifters and drug dealers, I saw him kicking out some homeless people trying to sleep in a stairwell and the guard escorted a single lady to her room, so in terms of understanding the neighborhood and problems inherent there, they get it. If you want a less sketchy neighborhood, stay closer to the airport or in one of the suburbs. I've been to Phoenix before and knew this hotel was in one of the lower rent neighborhoods, that won't change it just is what it is, period.
I really have no real complaints, all the issues here were being resolved, and if people didn't like it, that sucks, but honestly they were all first world problem stuff, so I think a solid 4 overall is deserved, and the staff gets a huge thumbs up from being for doing everything they could despite literally everything going wrong.
God Bless ~Amy
PS: As already stated I stay in tons of hotels, if never stayed in one where they stick more than enough coffee for a single day.
