I got a cut and perm from Akemi at Atelier May.
The salon is quite nice and I like how they offer you something to drink when you go there.
Akemi spoke really good English so communicating with her to tell her exactly what I wanted wasn't an issue. I showed her a picture of what I was looking for and she went at it. The cut itself was good, though I don't really get hair cuts that are all that funky or out there.
As for the perm, it was a body wave and not a digital perm. Perhaps it's due to my hair, but the perm did not take the first time. Went flat in 1 week or so. I went to NYC the week after and when I came back, I called about getting fixed. Apparently, if you book the appointment for a fix within 1 week, you can get it fixed for free; more than a week, you have to pay. At least it wasn't charged at full price again. That second perm stayed around maybe 2-3 weeks and kind of became barely visible a month later. Again, it could just be my hair getting used to being permed so can't necessarily fault Atelier May for that.
I've since switched to digital perms elsewhere and it seems like it works out better (thus far).
