  • This is a tough one. It was Sunday at 5:30pm when I dropped my iPhone 4 on a tile floor. It already had a small crack previously, but this time it completely shattered to the point where I got glass splinters on my finger tips. I went online to find anywhere that was open this late on a Sunday, and I found guru crew. I got over there at about 5:50 and was told it'd take about 45-50 minutes and be $90. I was also told that they use only top of the line replacement parts, and Apple would never be able to tell the difference since their parts have all the same logos and letters/numbers on them. I left my phone with them and came back at 6:45pm, I still had to wait, but one of the guys let me know that I had some corrosion inside of it, but my water sensors were still in good condition. He recommended going to Apple and telling them a little lie if I wanted to get a new phone, since my phone WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. I finally got my phone back at 7:15pm, after they were closed. It looked good, I noticed the now visible light sensor in their replica glass, but whatever--the screen was straight and I was able to use it again. Yesterday the tip of a headphone jack broke off while inside of my phone, so I took it to Apple, since it was still under warranty, and also told them the guru crew suggested lie about "my phone having charging issues and I didn't know why" (due to the corrosion). The guy at the genius bar took it to the back, opened up my phone and saw SCREWS MISSING FROM INSIDE. He also pointed out that the front glass was definitely not from Apple and that my warranty was now void due to having someone else OBVIOUSLY tamper with the inside of my phone. Great. I have replaced glass on previous iPhone models myself, so I knew a thing or two about the insides. But the iPhone 4 has a ton more screws and room for error, or else I would have just done it myself in the first place; however, I was NOT about to take it back to guru crew since I felt like I could get to the headphone jack myself, without misplacing the screws. Luckily I was able to get it out and avoided paying the $199 for a new phone on top of the $90 I spent at guru crew. From now on, I will never trust a shop to take care of my iPhones. If I didn't know what I was doing inside of my phone, like most of the population, I would have ended up spending almost $300. I give the 2 stars because if my phone had been out of warranty, it would have been a great option because Apple doesn't fix cracked screens--they will just sell you a new phone. No matter what a shop says, I now do not believe that they can repair it with quality parts to where Apple would never notice. BUT NOW I OWN A PHONE WITH A VOID WARRANTY !
