A few years ago I was moving out of Madison and selling things on eBay. One of my monitors sold for $25 and I quoted the buyer $25 shipping. I took the monitor to this UPS store to be shipped. In addition to the $25 they charged a $25 fee for materials and packaging, which was fine - I just needed to get rid of the monitor and didn't have time to deal with the effort myself.
A week later I get an e-mail from the buyer, saying the package had been dropped by the UPS guy and was broken. Since all UPS packages are insured to $100 against damage, I go to this store to get a partial refund. The staff here informs me that the insurance is void in this case. "Why is that?" I ask. "Well, it wasn't packed to our standards". "But YOU packed it!", I reply. "Well, it wasn't done to our standards, so too bad".
Wow! This probably goes down as the most outrageous customer service response I've had my whole life. After some other crappy experiences at other UPS stores, I just decided to never ship anything through them or UPS for that matter. Since this event, I've shipped over 100 packages via FedEx ground and never had a problem. I think those results speak for themselves.
