  • My husband and I went to the Northsight Blvd. Los Sombreros for the first time this month. We indulged in their 10-course tasting menu for two ($75.00 for two people). Our server, Maria was very good. The courses were brought out at a reasonable pace. Not too rushed. The chicken tortilla soup was excellent and was the first course. Just spicy enough, plenty of corn, fried tortilla strips on top, great flavor. We thought if all the courses were this good we were going to really enjoy ourselves. The second course was a small hibiscus taco. Unusual, sweet, but very good in a unique way. The rest of the courses were either disappointing or very disappointing. The courses had far too much sauce on them. The sauce seemed to be the same on all the courses that had mole sauce in some way. The smokey flavor of the chipotle was way overdone in the sauces that included it as an ingredient. All we tasted was chipotle and nothing else. Many of the courses included corn, and by the time we were done we were "corned" out for a while. Also, the 10-course tasting for two is not specific in that some of the dishes you each get your own of, and others there is only one and you have to figure out a way to share it. For example, one pork chop was served with mole sauce to me and the chicken dish was served to my husband. So, I ate half the pork chop and my husband ate half the chicken and we switched plates. We were not a fan of this. Someone is not getting the best cut or portion of each dish and it starts to get cold in the process also. The pork chop was not tender. It was a thin cut pork chop and had it been a normal cut pork chop it may have been better. If you like chips and salsa you may also be disappointed. The chips are very, very thin (and cold) and don't have a lot of flavor. The fish dish had far too many capers on top of it and the piece of trout was about 2" X 2". The capers far overpowered the light delicate fish, especially with a piece that small. The second fish which they said was a snapper was smothered in a chipotle sauce which ruined the fish totally. We did not eat it. Horrible combination of smoke and mushy fish. The corn cake soufle with mole sauce was very mushy and rather than make the corn cake soufle and put the mole sauce on top, it appeared they had baked some mole in the soufle and then put more mole on top. I swear there was 1/3 cup of mole sauce on a 2" X 2" pice of corn cake soufle. Neither my husband and I felt the soufle had set up enough. We know they should be light and delicate but this almost tasted undercooked. We found it odd that Maria took the plate, noticed we did not eat it, but did not ask if anything was wrong. Two salsas are served, one medium heat and one spicy. Both were thin and runny and ran off the chip. There was not a lot of ingredients to the salsa so it was hard to get them to stay on the chip. (not chunky but rather thin and runny) The Piloncillo ice cream was served in a bowl with zero garnish. It tasked like a carmel or sugar cane ice cream. Very lack luster. Plain - nothing on top. I gave it a two stars because the server was good and we would go back on a cold day in Scottsdale for a bowl the corn chowder soup. Considering how long their other Scottsdale location has been in business we expected better food.
