  • I had heard of the developments at Ballys Grand Bazaar Shops and missed an opportunity to join my office mates for a trip to the newly opened Del's Lemonade one Friday for lunch. (I allowed my duty to a work deadline come before food!) They raved about the authentic lobster roll dressed with mayo, the refreshing lemonade, and brought me back a cannoli to taste (nothing special). A few days later, I had a small window of time between afternoon appointments and somehow my stomach and curiosity led me to park at Paris and walk over to Ballys Grand Bazaar Shops. This place felt like a temporary pop-up marketplace. It reminded me of downtown's Container Park without the charm or character, i.e., fire-breathing praying mantis out front as a welcome beacon. After winding through a maze of pathways and finding help from the directory map, I came upon Del's. I was surprised at how tiny the stall was and in amazement and how much can be done in such a small foot print! There were no customers and the gentleman was standing in front of the counter. He immediately got behind the counter and gave a brief explanation of the menu and its history. You can tell he cares about the business and product! I placed my order for a Lobster Roll (15.95), Lemonade Slush (6.00), and Mac N Cheese (8.95 regular, they also offer it with lobster). In this tiny spot all the prep happened: a foil tin of Mac N Cheese popped into oven to heat up, the bun for the Lobster Roll was put into another silver box to be warmed, brushed with butter, and then finished with prepared lobster meat that was placed into the roll. With order complete, I gave Del's one last glance as I left and saw a line of three people queued up. The guy had greeted the others behind me, answered their questions while making it clear that he was making one order at a time (mine!). I was glad but wondered how the guy could keep up with handling one customer at a time, would three, ot four customers be the tipping point? On to the food: good, not great. Mac N Cheese had nice crumbs on top but overall dry and not worth the price. The Lobster Roll had a good amount of chunky lobster and was lightly dressed with mayo. (I prefer lobster rolls warm and buttery, no mayo.) A squeeze of lemon made this one better. The brush of butter on the roll was tasty. The Lemonade Slush hit the spot. It was smooth and though there was a subtle lemony flavor from fresh lemons and lemon oil, the dominant characteristic was a fake lemonade powder taste. I was disappointed to see it is made with high fructose corn syrup. Overall, the idea and journey to Del's was way more exciting than the actual meal. If I happened to be nearby again, I might stop at Del's and try some of the other menu items. I certainly would not make a special trip nor would I leave a work deadline to come here.
