| - I'm really sad to give only 2 stars, because I would love to support a non-chain business in the Waterfront. However, this bakery really needs to improve their product if they want to stick around.
I first visited a week ago, and was hoping to try a cupcake. I only saw enormous, heavily decorated cupcakes for $3.99, so I opted instead for a large chocolate chip cookie. It was good and cheaper than other options around, so I was pretty pleased!
Today I stopped in again hoping for another delicious cookie, but instead it was dry and nothing like what I got a week ago. They also had a regular cupcake available for $1.25, so I was excited to try one as well. It was truly awful. It was hard as a rock, tasting like it had been made literally weeks ago. I was going to just eat the icing, but it tasted chemical-y and just off. If you are just starting out as a business, you really cannot be putting out product that is this bad.
Finally, they need to work on the atmosphere and displays. The gelato looks so unappetizing I almost walked out on my first visit: It's nearly empty, and what's left looks old and freezer burned. The decor is trying for trendy, but so sparse it feels really unwelcoming. The staff was ok, but didn't smile or show any enthusiasm for the product.
In a neighborhood with so many chains that people are loyal to, a small business needs to stand out to build a clientele. Unfortunately Bakery Square did not stand out in a good way. I'd recommend limiting the products on offer--no gelato, less pastries, focus on FRESH cookies and cupcakes--and making the space more welcoming.
