  • DO NOT MOVE HERE. Nope, don't do it. Don't even think about it. My boyfriend recently moved out after his 13-month lease ended. The one plus: it's close to Old Town, if that's what you're looking for. So where do I begin? While the interiors of the units are nice (though cheaply updated; the units themselves are quite old, with inefficient A/C), it's the stuff happening outside that is problematic. The complex is FILTHY. Trash, cockroaches, dog poop, abandoned furniture... you name it, it's there! The "dog park" is full of poop-- I'm not sure how often they clean it, but it's really not a safe place for dogs or people to be walking around. The tennis/basketball court is cracked, making the surfaces impossible to play on. I imagine this would expose the company to serious litigation if someone were to trip and suffer an injury out there. The condition of the courts declined significantly during our time at The Sycamore. Meanwhile, they spent over a year (??) building a shiny new leasing office. The two pools were often closed for "vandalism" but I never noticed any preventative measures to prevent this from happening. The leasing agents often closed up shop early on days where we needed to retrieve packages. This was extremely inconvenient and unprofessional, and rarely did we see the same leasing agent twice. It's safe to say none of the staff actually live on the property. They also answer the phone sporadically. One night when my boyfriend accidentally locked us out, we went to the office for help and it was already locked up, even though the sign indicated that they'd be open for another 20 minutes. By far, the biggest issue with this place is the residents. A large percentage of residents are Section 8 tenants, which should tell you a lot. Children run rampant around the complex with no supervision, making even a short walk to the mailbox a real pain. Too often I found myself slamming on the breaks while driving through the complex because some kid rode his scooter right in front of me. They are always in the pools by themselves and were occasionally in the disgusting fitness center, playing on the machines. Again... a lawsuit could so easily be brought against the complex for allowing this kind of stuff to happen. On NUMEROUS occasions, police were present in the complex. One time we called the police on a woman who was verbally abusing her children-- within earshot of an oblivious leasing agent, showing people around. A few weeks before we left, my boyfriend was walking the dog at night and saw 8-10 cop cars centered around an apartment. I don't even want to know what they were there for, but you can use your imagination. I really hate to say it, but the residents seem to be either loud college students or trashy redneck-type people. I was yelled at multiple times by strangers while walking the dog, typically in broad daylight. Someone is always outside having a smoke, in a loud altercation, or having audible (and sometimes visible) sex. A woman who lives in a unit near ours may suffer from Tourette's, because it was quite normal to hear her screaming profanities or sobbing hysterically at all hours. Random people who obviously didn't live there would ask me to let them into the pool areas. This is just a sampling... I could go on. The Sycamore isn't worth it. Not price-wise, not experience-wise. It's actually kind of scary. Stay far, far away.
