  • I joined Eclipse about a year and a half ago when it was time to accept that I now live too far from Trainers Fitness, my previous gym. Eclipse is a much more pleasant, cleaner and brighter environment than Trainers, although I think Trainers has the edge when it comes to the taught classes. What I like most about Eclipse is the space - I love the old, well worn wooden floorboards, the big windows looking down into Little Italy and the vintage industrial details. I also really, really appreciate that the cardio machines are in good working order and they have individual TVs built in. When I didn't have cable, the access to TV certainly motivated me to get myself to the gym. Also, an hour on the treadmill can really fly by when your attention is on a show, not on the elapsed time display. Another good thing about Eclipse is all the equipment that's available for non-machine based training. There are plenty of hand weights, weighted bars, kettle bells, medicine balls, BOSU balls, stability balls, boxing gloves, and so on. You can devise a pretty thorough workout with this gear to supplement whatever you're doing with the weight machines. As I mentioned above, I'm not too crazy about the classes at Eclipse. The spin classes have a cult following, but as a person who doesn't own bike shorts or clip shoes, I felt somewhat intimidated in the spin classes I joined. I have really enjoyed Eclipse's boxing training classes, but most of the other classes are kind of dull (core intervals, Pilates mat, strength, zzz). I've been to the hot yoga class, but it's more like 'muggy yoga with the thermostat up' than 'hot'. For some reason, many of the classes are taught in the early afternoon, which is no good for anyone who holds down a regular job. I think the membership rates are reasonable at Eclipse. I pay $52 month by month with no joining fee. They have discounts for people who live or work in the neighbourhood. Last year, I didn't make it in to the gym for three months due to an injury and then traveling. I was not charged for these months. This might have been an accounting mistake but I appreciated it nonetheless.
