  • My dachshund is my life. He is my best friend, companion, and foot warmer. Alas, like most dachshunds I've known, he likes to eat things he shouldn't-specifically panties. After discovering that my little guy had eaten the..*ahem*...choice parts on six pairs, I knew that this could cause a serious intestinal blockage (he had chewed through my laundry sack in order to get to them in case you were wondering). However, having not discovered this until eight+ hours after the fact, I didn't know what to do. Given that I care so much for my dog, I was freaking out and called Sonora Veterinary Specialists - around 10PM. I spoke with Dr. Clifton Crooks for probably about twenty minutes. That's right, after a brief hold (he was seeing another patient), I got to talk to a DVM on the phone for around twenty minutes. Dr. Crooks was kind, understanding, and knowledgeable, answered ALL of my questions, and gave me advice on what to do if any symptoms showed up. Fast forward to 1AM, and I noticed my dog was displaying signs of physical discomfort (bowing like in downward facing dog), so without hesitation I brought him in. The vet techs were lovely, and let me talk (because I was stressed I needed to talk). My little guy decided he would poop on the floor for good measure. Not only did Dr. Crooks (HIMSELF, not a vet tech) sift through the poo to find remnants of panties, he - true to his earlier interactions - was caring, thorough, and patient. He was gentle to my little buddy during the physical exam, and did a wonderful job of easing not only my nerves, but my dog's as well. We decided to do some x-rays for good measure and afterwards he gave me all of my options and talked about best and worse case scenarios. He showed me the x-rays in his office, and even gave me electronic copies on a CD in case we needed to go to another vet for surgery (I was visiting my family from out of town). All in all, Dr. Crooks probably gave me at least 1.5 hours of face time; I ask A LOT of questions. WOW! Now mind you, the hospital was not busy, as there were no other emergency patients at the time, but that is just amazing. That's exactly what I want in a vet - someone who will give me the best care they are capable of given realistic constraints. Yes, it was expensive, the exam cost $105.00 and the x-rays were $200.00 - but I can say with complete confidence that the care my dog received was absolutely worth that price. The icing on the cake is when they said it was ok to let my little guy off leash for a minute while I was paying (again, no one else was in the hospital). I had to run after him though because he tried to go back into the clinic area because was searching for Dr. Crooks. Yes, you heard that right. My dog LIKED this vet! If you need quality 24-hour emergency service, then Sonora Veterinary Specialists is a sure bet. My dog turned out fine, so the trip turned out to be a non-issue (since there was no actual treatment done, just had to wait and see), but even so, I would spend the money and make the visit again in a heartbeat. I wish I could give this veterinary office 10 stars, but Yelp only lets me give five. Thank you so much Dr. Crooks and staff! *Also, I learned a valuable lesson and will not have cloth laundry sacks - I bought a plastic bin with a lid to use from now on.
