| - After eating here more than once a day for over three months (my office moved right opposite fou d'ici a few months back), I am finally ready to review this one-stop independent caterer / grocery store.
The reason I come back is the variety of the catering options as well as the quality of the ingredients used and of the final products. Granted, you pay a little extra for the quality, but it is definitely worth it. Their deli corner is well-stocked, with delicious bresaola, viande de grison and roast beef, among other things. Their selection of cheese is also quite thorough and fresh.
Other than being a caterer and grocery store, Fou d'ici also has a café corner with an espresso machine, filter coffee, a selection of kusmi tea and some pastries (mainly French baked goods, muffins, brownies, as well as macaroons from point g, and other patisseries...) - i understand they resell these goods from Arhoma (not sure). While it is. in my opinion, a shame that they use dark roast coffee beans for their espresso, their coffee remains the best coffee you can find on this side of Sherbrooke Street (if you have a little bit of time, head over to pikolo north of Sherbrooke St for an exquisite medium roast espresso).
As previously mentioned, their salad selection is very interesting (with some daring pairings such as in the kale salad or the chou asiatique salad), so are their cooked meals (they have a rotating menu, so you are always surprised). A point I really appreciate is the element of surprise as i make my way there: the catering team likes to explore new twists on regular on the menu, so don't be surprised to find unusual (yet delicious) touches such as chicken with mango ketchup or a beef filet with voodoo sauce. I was not very impressed with their wraps, which felt a bit soggy and heavy.
The grocery store carries everything you might need on your typical emergency grocery run and then some: from artisan-made beverages (including microbrews) to charcuterie to imported cocoa powder, you will find whatever it is you might be after.
Where Fou d'Ici fails in my opinion is their customer service: while most of their employees offer a remarkable service, the apparent owners/managers do not seem to encourage the consistently superior customer experience this place seems to deserve. The reason I say that I have had a couple of unpleasant situations which, if management was actively service-oriented, would not have occurred to begin with. On the whole, however, the staff is very responsive and friendly (with a few exceptions here and there). Again, that is my (subjective) impression based on daily visits (save the weekend).
I find their prices very fair in light of the thought and effort behind their menu and the quality of products offered.
