  • Make sure you get an accurate price quote before you agree to get your biked fixed. You may be surprised when you get the bill. I'm giving this place 3 stars only for convenience because It's the closest bike shop near my house that carried Dahon tires according to Yelp and other bike shops. I needed one of my tires replaced so I called a few bike shops around the downtown area near where I live and either they didn't carry 20" Dahon tires or they didn't have any readily on hand. One bike shop located at Kensington Market told me to go to Urbane Cyclist and that he was 99% sure they would have it. So I walked my bike over to Urbane Cyclist. There was a line for service, but they had 2 counters, so it went quicker than I thought. Told the service guy I needed a new tire and it was my first time buying a tire, I asked for their price range. Service guy told me cheapest is $20 and the high end is $40. He also told me the tire that blew out was a cheap one, which was why it burst after I went over a pothole. I didn't want that to happen again, so I went for the mid-grade, which according to him was $30, plus $10 labor. Not a bad deal, right? I will soon find out I was wrong. Happy with the quote, I waited while they fixed my bike. They had a lot of cool merchandise in the store, which I happily perused while waiting for my bike. Service guy came and got me and told me to go to a different counter to get my bill. My bill turned out to included $10 for labor for the tire replacement, $5 for tube (which service guy didn't tell me about, but I guess I should have asked about?), and $45 for the tire, not the $30 service guy told me I was getting. I asked Counter guy why the difference and he told me they didn't have $30 tires in the system, and the tire Service guy installed was $45. The cheapest one they had in the system was $40, but because I wanted a mid-grade, the $45 tire was my only choice. In my head, I thought, "Man, these guys are ripping me off right now." Service guy came over to say he was surprised and confused that the tires were $45, and he thought they were only $30. He didn't exactly apologize... he was more "confused." Not wanting to hold up the line behind me, I didn't argue any further. As for the other service I needed, they quoted me $30 for labor to fix the bike headset, but if they can't fix it, they would have to replace it with a new headset for $30. I thought I was better off getting a brand new headset+labor but they told me they didn't want to do that until after they work on it to see if a replacement was actually needed. I thought getting a completely new replacement was the better deal for the $30, rather than just paying for the labor to fix it. But, then again, I didn't want to hold up the line forming behind me, so I just let them do their thing because really, they are the bike pros.... (tsk tsk.) In summary, I'm giving Urbane Cyclist 3 stars only for convenience. They gave me spotty "price quotes" and there were surprises in my bill. If there was a bike store that carried tires for my Dahon, I most likely choose to go there over this store. Sadly, there isn't one.
