  • I bought the World Champion package (6 --8 minute sessions) at Phoenix International Speedway. Having driven 11 times over the years at 6 different tracks ranging from 2 mile, 1 1/2 mile and 1/2 mile I thought the 1 mile track at PIR would be a great experience. I especially liked the NASCAR Racing Experience (NRE) program description on their website. They use real former NASCAR race cars. It stated "6 back to back sessions with brief pit stops in between" and "a total of 48 minutes on track". It also stated "work on achieving top speeds while you increase speeds every session". That sounded good to me. Here are some facts on what I experienced and what really took place at PIR. The "brief pit stop" after each session actually lasted about 5-8 minutes because the my spotter had another driver on the track. I was strapped in the car for almost 1 1/2 hours. My 8 minute racing session times started when I rolled away from pit road and it ended when I got back to pit road at the end of the session. I don't call that "on track". Additionally, you have to keep your car at 1500 RPM until cleared to go above the blend line and then again when you go below the blend line returning to pit road. This is very slow and eats up a lot of time and limits your racing. You start out running a lap at 3900 RPM, then 4100, 4300 and finally 4900. I guess that's what NRE calls increasing speed. The car also has a rev limiter chip that is set for about 5000 RPM. It can't go any faster. As a result, I ran the same RPM/speed for all 6 sessions! Increasing speeds every session is a bit deceiving, in my opinion. On a positive note, the car I was in was well maintained and it drove/handled well. The NRE personnel I came in contact with were professional and very helpful. The spotter did a good job sorting things out on the track to ensure I didn't linger too long behind slower cars. As mentioned in a previous review the NRE program seems designed for beginners. Overall, NRE at PIR didn't meet my expectations, considering the cost, the way they make you drive the race car and the way they time your sessions. Disappointing to say the least.
