Aroma Bakery is just like most other Chinese bakery, serving such familiar classics like egg tarts. But I came here for their lo poh banh (aka. 'Wife cakes').
Since the good pastry shops in downtown and east Chinatowns closed down, the ones remaining that do make wife cakes make lousy ones. Hence I started looking for a place that makes wife cakes that is as good as what the Chinatowns used to have (or what I had in San Francisco). A little birdie (ie. Yelp) told me to try Aroma.
If you are here even just for lo poh banh, you will not be disappointed. It's the way it should be: pure soft and chewy, sweet, and definitely not burnt nor with odd bits in it. It's worth the trek to Scarborough, but I shouldn't have to go to Scarborough to get my wifey fix.
{TTC: any 85 bus or the 21 to Sheppard and Brimley, then walk north. Aroma is housed in the rear end of a small commercial building right beside the railway underpass on the east side of the road. The building itself has probably seen better days. Plenty of parking at the back.}
NOTE TO SELF AND YOU: They do have other locations as well, like one in Splendid China Tower mall across the street from Pacific Mall on Steeles Ave.
