  • This was a very entertaining show, and not just because of the singing. It was maybe half singing, a quarter old-school offensive comedy, and a quarter unintentional comedy. The singing was very good, though Mr DeCosta lacks Sinatra's upper range and didn't sing any of the quieter, gentler songs that made fans swoon just as much as the big energetic hits. I think that's what the audience wants to hear, "Luck Be a Lady" over "Moonlight in Vermont." His personality and swagger makes up for any shortcomings in talent with raw entertainment value. All that said, the unintentional comedy, part self-parody, part sheer goofiness made me laugh and forgive the shortcomings of the show. Examples were over-over-use of microphone vibrato technique, "oops" lighting errors, occasional lapses into a different voice that made plain David is a Sinatra impersonator, not a jazz singer performing Sinatra's favorites in his own style. It was clear his goal is to put on a show to transport us to another world, not to simply pay homage with a set of songs sung beautifully. More showmanship was on offer that demonstrates his devotion to this material as he kissed all the ladies without missing a lyrical beat even though there is a recorded band. In a real jazz show the band would work around the singer's improvisation, where here David has rehearsed all his moves so completely as to sound "as if" there is a live ensemble working with him. He's a dedicated entertainer and clearly devoted to his subject even if he's unable to really fill his shoes as a vocalist. B+
