| - Klavon's is a quaint, vintage ice cream parlor that is definitely a Pittsburgh tradition. When you walk inside you're immediately transported back in time for an old-school ice cream adventure!
I've found myself in yet another scenario where I wish I could give half stars on Yelp; I would really like to give Klavon's 3.5 stars. The atmosphere is great and provides such a fun experience for kids and adults alike. There is a large sundae menu and a lot of nice variety. Most recently I tried the mint chocolate chip Oreo sundae and loved it! The ice cream was topped with hot fudge, house-made chocolate whipped cream, and Oreo chunks. On my last trip to Klavon's, I learned that they've actually started making all of their ice cream in-house, which is a major positive! They previously had ordered their ice cream from another local business in Pennsylvania, but within the past year they've started making their own. Knowing that my ice cream was made on-site added to the overall experience for me.
The thing that confuses me about Klavon's is the service. Perhaps I've just been there at off times, but the employees usually seem lethargic and not very friendly. I was recently at Klavon's on a Friday at around 5 PM (a pretty slow time right after work), and there was only one employee working who kept disappearing into the back room and leaving the front unattended. We watched as a father and his young son entered the ice cream parlor, waited around patiently for about 5 to 6 minutes, and then just walked right back out since the employee never came back to the front of the store to help them. I realize that it was a slow time of day, but when you're ignoring people and losing business because of it, that's probably an issue that should be resolved!
That being said, I still enjoy going to Klavon's every once in awhile for a sweet treat. It's definitely a sight to see in Pittsburgh if you've never been before!
